Project Overview
MirfaQ is a community-driven café discovery platform designed to help people discover cafés and other suitable spaces based on their needs, preferences, and location. Starting in Addis Ababa, users can explore nearby and highly rated cafés, view their atmosphere, pricing, coffee quality, laptop-friendliness, and other useful characteristics, while also viewing photos, ratings, and reviews from the community. Users can save places they like, contribute new cafés, leave reviews, and help keep information up to date. The platform combines location-based discovery with community contributions to make finding the right place easier and more personal.
The Problem
Finding a suitable café in Addis Ababa can be surprisingly difficult. While many cafés are available, information about them is often scattered across social media, Google Maps, word of mouth, and individual posts. These sources may provide a café's name and location, but they often fail to answer the questions people actually care about: Is it affordable? Is the environment comfortable? Is there reliable Wi-Fi? Can I work on my laptop? Is there enough space? Is the coffee good? Is it a good place to study or meet someone? This becomes especially frustrating when people are looking for a café based on a specific purpose rather than simply wanting coffee. Someone looking for a quiet place to study has different requirements from someone looking for an aesthetic location to meet friends or a comfortable workspace for several hours. There is currently no focused platform that brings these factors together into a simple, community-driven discovery experience tailored to the local context.
The Solution
MirfaQ addresses this problem by creating a dedicated platform for discovering cafés based on what people actually need from a place , rather than simply where a café happens to be located. Users can search and explore cafés, discover nearby places, filter them using relevant characteristics, view ratings and community reviews, and see photos and other information that help them decide whether a place fits their needs. Location-based discovery makes it easier to find suitable places around them, while curated tags and community feedback provide context that traditional map listings often lack. MirfaQ also turns its users into contributors. Anyone can submit a café, add useful information, upload photos, and share their experience, while submitted locations can be reviewed before being published to maintain the quality of the platform. Through contributions, ratings, reviews, favorites, and a points-based community system, MirfaQ aims to build a continuously improving database of places that reflects the experiences of the people who actually use them.
